Hyundai has introduced new turbo-petrol variants to its Santa Fe family SUV line-up in Australia, expanding the options beyond the existing hybrid models. The 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe now includes a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, derived from the Sonata N Line sedan and luxury Genesis line-up. This addition brings a more affordable non-hybrid option to the market, available in three variants: the entry-level Santa Fe, mid-spec Elite, and flagship Calligraphy.
The 2.5-litre turbo-petrol Santa Fe is priced $2500 lower than its hybrid counterpart, making the starting price $53,000 before on-road costs. This move aims to bridge the gap between the previous-generation Santa Fe and the new model, offering enhanced standard equipment and a larger body size along with updated engines. The turbo-petrol Calligraphy variant, priced at $72,500, is set to follow the entry-level and Elite models into the Australian market, with an optional six-seat configuration available for an extra $500.
The new-generation Hyundai Santa Fe, launched in May 2024, recently achieved a full five-star ANCAP safety rating, initially applicable to hybrid variants only. Replacing the previous 3.5-litre non-turbo V6, the 2.5-litre turbo engine delivers 206kW and 422Nm, offering improved performance and efficiency. The turbo-petrol Santa Fe comes with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive, a feature not seen in petrol-only Santa Fe models in Australia since 2019.
With a braked towing capacity of 2000kg, the 2.5-litre Santa Fe surpasses the hybrid’s limit of 1650kg, although it falls short of the previous-generation petrol V6 and turbo-diesel variants. Cargo capacity has also increased in the petrol version, providing 642 litres with the third row folded and 1963 litres with the second and third rows folded. Hyundai offers optional XRT Adventure and Peak Option Packs for off-road enthusiasts, enhancing the Santa Fe’s capability with rugged features.
Standard equipment in the non-hybrid petrol Santa Fe mirrors that of equivalent hybrid models, excluding hybrid-specific features like regenerative braking. The turbo-petrol Santa Fe is now available for purchase, with deliveries expected to commence by the end of December. Pricing for the various Santa Fe configurations ranges from $53,000 for the entry-level petrol version to $75,500 for the Calligraphy Hybrid AWD six-seat variant, excluding on-road costs.
Hyundai’s expansion of the Santa Fe line-up reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry towards offering a diverse range of powertrain options to cater to varying customer preferences. The introduction of the turbo-petrol variants not only enhances the competitiveness of the Santa Fe in the SUV market but also provides consumers with more choice and flexibility when selecting a family-friendly SUV.
