Polestar, the electric car spin-off from Volvo, has hit a speed bump with the delay of its highly anticipated Polestar 6 sports car. The company has decided to prioritize the production of a more affordable Polestar 7 SUV, which will mark its first car not manufactured in China. This decision has pushed back the release of the Polestar 6, initially showcased as the O2 concept, promising cutting-edge performance and technology.
The Polestar brand, affiliated with Volvo and Geely, follows a sequential naming convention for its models, with the Polestar 1 coupe being the first, followed by the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3. However, the Polestar 6’s delay means that it will be preceded by the Polestar 7 and Polestar 5, with the former expected to hit the market in 2027.
Scott Maynard, Polestar Australia’s head, emphasized the current focus on bringing the Polestar 7 to market swiftly. He explained that the Polestar 6’s launch will now come after the Polestar 7, indicating a potential delay of up to two years. The Polestar 6, based on the Polestar 5 sedan’s platform, boasts impressive specifications, including an 800-volt electrical system and dual electric motors delivering 650kW and 900Nm.
With a projected 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h, the Polestar 6 aims to rival performance icons like the Porsche 911. The company has announced the ‘LA Concept’ launch edition with an estimated starting price of $US200,000, positioning it as one of Polestar’s most luxurious offerings.
In contrast, the Polestar 7 will cater to a broader market segment as a compact SUV, smaller and potentially more affordable than the Polestar 4. This strategic shift aims to increase brand exposure and accessibility, with Maynard highlighting the importance of a diverse product lineup to attract a wider audience.
The Polestar 7 will mark a significant milestone for the brand as it will be the first Polestar model manufactured in Europe, departing from the previous production facilities in China.
