BMW Australia has expanded its X3 lineup with the addition of the turbo-diesel inline-six 40d xDrive variant, set to hit local showrooms later this year. The new model, priced at $108,900 before on-road costs, will offer a powerful and efficient driving experience to customers.
Initially announced globally in January, the diesel X3 40d xDrive was not confirmed for the Australian market until now. This move underscores BMW’s commitment to offering a diverse range of powertrain options to cater to different customer preferences.
Joining the existing X3 variants, including the 30e plug-in hybrid and turbo-petrol 20 xDrive models, the 40d xDrive is positioned below the flagship M50 xDrive in the lineup. With deliveries expected to start in the third quarter of 2025, this addition aims to enhance the appeal of the X3 range in the mid-size luxury SUV segment.
Equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, the X3 40d xDrive boasts impressive performance figures, generating 210kW of power and 670Nm of torque in the Australian specification. This power output enables the SUV to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 5.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 245km/h.
Featuring an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system, the X3 40d xDrive ensures optimal power delivery and efficiency. With a claimed fuel consumption of 6.7L/100km on the WLTP cycle, this model combines performance with fuel economy, making it a well-rounded choice for SUV enthusiasts.
Noteworthy features of the 2025 BMW X3 40d xDrive include 20-inch alloy wheels, M Sport package, adaptive suspension, adaptive LED headlights, BMW Iconic Glow illuminated kidney grille, and a host of advanced technological amenities for a premium driving experience.
Inside the cabin, the fourth-generation X3 offers a modern and sophisticated ambiance, highlighted by a curved display housing a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Standard adaptive suspension, adaptive LED headlights, and illuminated kidney grille further enhance the X3’s appeal.
BMW’s decision to introduce a diesel variant in the X3 lineup aligns with its strategy to offer a diverse powertrain portfolio, catering to varying customer needs and preferences. While the automotive industry is witnessing a shift towards electric powertrains, diesel engines continue to play a significant role, especially in larger SUV models.
In 2024, diesel-powered vehicles accounted for a notable portion of total vehicle sales in Australia, indicating that there is still demand for diesel engines in the market. By introducing the 40d xDrive variant, BMW aims to provide customers with a compelling choice that combines performance, efficiency, and luxury in a single package.
As the automotive landscape evolves with the advancement of electric and hybrid technologies, the introduction of the BMW X3 40d xDrive represents a strategic move by the automaker to offer a well-rounded SUV that meets the needs of discerning customers seeking a blend of power, efficiency, and sophistication.
