A recent recall by Mazda Australia has affected over 7,900 units of its 2023-2024 Mazda CX-60 and CX-90 models. The recall was initiated due to concerns with the hybrid system, potentially leading to difficulties restarting the engine. The affected vehicles, totaling 6,557 CX-60s and 1,373 CX-90s, were flagged for a software issue impacting the Powertrain Control Module and Battery Energy Control Module, affecting the hybrid battery assist function.
The recall notice also highlighted issues with the Dash Electronic Supply Unit, which could trigger warning messages in the instrument cluster, including the engine warning light, failure of seat belt warnings, and malfunction of the 360° view camera functions. Specifically noted for diesel variants was a concern regarding the clutch connecting motor and engine engagement during engine restarts, potentially leading to engine failure to restart promptly.
Furthermore, the CX-60 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) faced potential issues related to improper programming of the Dash-ESU, resulting in warning messages and possible failures in the high-voltage battery cooling system, impacting the electric drive mode availability and safety systems like seat belt warnings and camera functions.
These concerns, if not addressed promptly, could pose safety risks for vehicle occupants and other road users. Mazda Australia assured affected owners that they would be contacted once the remedy is available, offering updates to the affected modules at no cost. Owners were advised to contact Mazda Australia for further information and to schedule updates at authorized dealerships.
Recalls in the automotive industry are not uncommon, with manufacturers prioritizing safety and addressing potential issues promptly to ensure the well-being of consumers. As vehicles become more technologically advanced, software-related concerns have become a focal point for recalls, emphasizing the importance of rigorous testing and continuous monitoring of vehicle systems.
Experts suggest that the increasing complexity of hybrid and electric vehicle systems necessitates stringent quality control measures to prevent unexpected failures. As automakers strive to enhance efficiency and performance through electrification, ensuring the reliability and safety of these systems becomes paramount to maintain consumer trust and brand reputation.
Vehicle recalls serve as a reminder of the collaborative effort required by manufacturers, regulators, and consumers to uphold safety standards in the automotive landscape. By promptly addressing issues and implementing corrective actions, automakers demonstrate their commitment to customer safety and satisfaction, reinforcing the importance of transparency and accountability in the industry.
