GWM has officially announced the upcoming arrival of the Tank 500 Hi4-T Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle in Australia, set to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2025. This new variant marks an expansion of the existing Tank 500 lineup, offering plug-in hybrid technology and upgraded hardware compared to the Lux and Ultra grades.
The current Tank 500 range is currently powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that generates 180kW and 380Nm of torque, supplemented by an electric motor adding 78kW and 268Nm. The combined power output is rated at 255kW and 648Nm, with energy sourced from a 1.76kWh battery positioned beneath the rear floor. The power is channeled through a nine-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system.
On the other hand, the new Hi4-T model retains the same petrol engine but now features a larger 120kW / 400Nm electric motor. This enhancement boosts the combined output to an impressive 300kW and 750Nm, supported by a significantly larger 37.1kWh battery that allows for up to 120km of electric-only driving range and a claimed total range of 950km.
The Hi4-T system comes equipped with a mechanical 4WD setup that doesn’t decouple, featuring three locking differentials, torque-on-demand distribution, and low-range gearing. This robust hardware enables a braked towing capacity of 3,000kg and maintains the off-road geometry with a 213mm ground clearance, 30-degree approach angle, 22.5-degree breakover, 24-degree departure angle, and an 800mm wading depth.
Charging convenience is a key highlight, with the Hi4-T supporting CCS2 DC fast charging at up to 50kW, capable of replenishing 30–80% of the battery in approximately 24 minutes. Home AC charging takes around 6.5 hours, while the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function allows for an external power supply of up to 6kW.
Internally, the Hi4-T distinguishes itself from the Lux and Ultra grades by adopting a five-seat configuration instead of seven to accommodate the larger battery and enhance second-row passenger comfort. The outer rear seats are heated, ventilated, and equipped with massaging functions, with controls accessible through a 7-inch touchscreen for climate, lighting, and media adjustments.
Moreover, the Hi4-T features a 14.6-inch infotainment display that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, and three-zone climate control. Interior options include black Nappa leather or a two-tone blue/cream finish, with the latter limited to specific exterior colors like Marble White and Crystal Black.
In terms of safety, the Hi4-T is equipped with standard features consistent with the broader Tank 500 range, such as seven airbags, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, parking sensors, and a 360-degree monitor. The GWM Care program supports the Hi4-T with a seven-year/unlimited kilometer warranty and an eight-year battery warranty.
The pricing for the 2025 GWM Tank 500 Lux and Ultra grades is set at $66,490 and $73,990 driveaway, respectively, while the pricing for the Tank 500 Hi4-T PHEV will be disclosed closer to its launch. The Tank 500 series continues to offer a compelling blend of power, technology, and off-road capabilities, catering to a diverse range of automotive preferences in the market.
