The Ford S650 Mustang has made its debut in Australia with significant updates in performance, pricing, and features. This seventh-generation model stands out as the sole option in the country offering a manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and a classic V8 engine note, making it a rare gem in today’s automobile market.
However, with these advancements comes a notable price increase. Prospective buyers will now have to allocate $64,990 plus additional on-road costs to acquire the base model, which includes a four-cylinder engine paired with an automatic gearbox. The manual transmission variant with a four-cylinder engine has been discontinued globally, marking a shift in the Mustang lineup.
Comparing it to its predecessor, the price hike is evident, with the previous generation’s starting price at $55,590 (+ORCs) for the 2.3 High Performance manual. The V8 variant also sees a similar price escalation, now commencing at $77,002 (+ORCs) for the GT manual. Additionally, a limited edition model named Dark Horse sits at the top end of the range, priced at $99,102 for the manual version, with only 1000 units allocated for the Australian market.
Despite the increase in pricing, the new Ford S650 Mustang boasts enhanced standard specifications, such as the Performance Pack now included in the Ecoboost model. This pack incorporates larger Brembo brakes, a shorter 3.55:1 diff, front strut brace, and a four-mode active exhaust system. Moreover, technological upgrades like an acceleration and lap timer, line lock function, and a drift handbrake have been integrated to enhance the driving experience.
Under the hood, the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine has been revamped, offering 232kW of power at 5500rpm and a 10% increase in torque to 475Nm at 3000rpm. The V8 variant receives dual air intakes and throttle bodies, maintaining similar power outputs to its predecessor at 345kW/550Nm. Noteworthy upgrades include wider rear tires, an engine oil cooler, and the option for MagneRide adaptive suspension in the GT models.
The interior of the new S650 Mustang showcases significant technological advancements, featuring large screens for infotainment and instrument display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with wireless charging, are part of the modernized infotainment system. The instrument display can be customized to mimic classic Mustang clusters from different eras, adding a nostalgic touch to the driving experience.
In conclusion, the Ford S650 Mustang represents a substantial update rather than a revolutionary change from the previous generation. Despite the higher price point, the new model offers a more refined driving experience with improved quality, steering accuracy, and consistent handling. The Ecoboost and GT variants deliver exhilarating performance, with the Dark Horse edition standing out for its enhanced driving dynamics and limited availability, making it a coveted choice for enthusiasts looking to own a piece of modern muscle car history.
