Ford Performance and its competitors are grappling with a theory surrounding the recent setbacks faced by the Gen3 Mustang at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. Speculations suggest that the aggressive kerbs at Albert Park may be disrupting the variable cam timing of the 5.4-litre Coyote engine, leading to a string of 11 winless races for the Mustang at the Melbourne circuit.

According to Brendan McGinnskin, Ford Performance’s Australian motorsport engineering lead, the sawtooth profile of the kerbs could potentially be impacting the cam timing, although there is no conclusive evidence to pinpoint it as the sole cause of performance issues. The situation raises concerns about straight-line speed, a topic that has been under scrutiny following the Mustang’s dominance at the Sydney 500.

McGinniskin highlighted disparities in straight-line performance data between brands, prompting Ford’s homologation team, Dick Johnson Racing, to bring attention to the issue. Despite strong podium finishes and race wins, the data revealed an imbalance that warranted further investigation by Supercars.

At Albert Park, drivers expressed concerns about the Mustangs’ competitiveness in straight-line speed, echoing previous feedback from the Sydney event. McGinniskin emphasized the need to relay this feedback to Supercars for a comprehensive assessment, considering various factors that could influence engine performance, such as kerbs, ambient temperature, and altitude.
Cam Waters, a key Ford driver, currently holds second place in the championship standings, trailing behind Will Brown. As the Supercars series progresses to the Taupō Super440 next month, the Ford team aims to address performance challenges and maintain its competitive edge in the championship race.
