A new contender is set to enter the Australian SUV market, as BYD prepares to launch its 2026 Sealion 8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. This seven-seater SUV promises impressive performance, with acceleration comparable to a V8 muscle car.
BYD’s Sealion 8 will join the existing Sealion range, offering top-of-the-line versions with over 300kW of power from a combination of petrol and electric motors. The vehicle boasts a sub-five-second 0-100km/h acceleration time and a claimed 200km electric-only driving range based on Chinese lab testing.
While pricing details are yet to be confirmed, the Sealion 8 is expected to position itself as a premium offering in the market, likely falling in a price range above the existing Sealion 6 and 7 models. Drawing inspiration from the BYD Tang L sold in China, the Sealion 8 shares dimensions comparable to popular SUVs like the Toyota Kluger and Mazda CX-80.
Australian buyers will have the option to choose between two plug-in hybrid systems: the front-wheel-drive DM-i and the all-wheel-drive DM-p. The DM-i model combines a turbo four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack, while the flagship DM-p version adds a rear electric motor and larger battery for enhanced performance.
BYD’s Sealion 8 promises a luxurious interior with seven seats in a two-three-two configuration. Features like heated, cooled, and massaging seats, along with advanced infotainment systems and driver assistance technologies, are expected to be included in the Australian models.
Overseas models of the Sealion 8 offer innovative features like DC fast charging, vehicle-to-load capability, and up to 1950 litres of boot space with the second and third rows folded. While some exclusive features like twin fridge/heating units and a DJI drone will not be available in the Australian version, options for a tow bar and advanced safety features are anticipated.
The BYD Sealion 8 is scheduled to arrive in Australia between January and March 2026, bringing a blend of performance, technology, and luxury to the competitive SUV segment. With its high-tech plug-in hybrid system and premium features, the Sealion 8 aims to make a mark in the Australian automotive market.
