The Hyundai Ioniq 9, a large electric SUV seating six or seven people over three rows, is scheduled to make its way to Australia in the latter half of 2025. Initially introduced as the Ioniq 7 in concept form in 2021, the vehicle evolved into the Ioniq 9, aiming to become the flagship of Hyundai’s electric lineup. This adjustment positions the Ioniq 9 as a prominent player in Hyundai’s strategy to offer distinct character models within its Ioniq family.
Hyundai’s design team has focused on optimizing interior space and enhancing aerodynamics for the 5-meter-long, 2.6-tonne Ioniq 9. Built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, the Ioniq 9 boasts a 110.3kWh battery and offers three powertrain options at launch. With an 800V electrical architecture, the Ioniq 9 can be charged at speeds up to 350kW and includes a vehicle-to-load outlet in the boot.
The entry-level Long Range RWD model features a single 160kW motor on the rear axle, providing an impressive official range of 620km. The Long Range AWD incorporates a 70kW motor on the front axle, while the Performance AWD variant boasts a pair of 160kW motors, delivering a 0-100km/h time of 5.2 seconds and a range of approximately 507km.
Expected to be priced between $100,000 and $140,000, the Ioniq 9 will likely offer two trim levels, Ultimate and Calligraphy. The vehicle will come standard with seven seats, with the option to transform it into a six-seater in the Calligraphy trim, featuring swiveling second-row seats for a luxurious mobile lounge experience.
Inside the Ioniq 9, drivers will find a familiar Hyundai dashboard design with a touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrument display. The SUV offers ample storage space, premium interior materials, and a Bose stereo system, catering to buyers seeking a blend of luxury and functionality in their electric SUV.
On the road, the Ioniq 9 promises a refined driving experience with a MacPherson-strut front and multi-link rear suspension setup. Equipped with self-leveling dampers and advanced chassis control systems, the Ioniq 9 aims to deliver a comfortable ride suitable for its luxury SUV positioning.
While not designed for sporty driving dynamics, the Ioniq 9 impresses with its calm and composed ride quality, aided by features like active noise-cancelling and acoustic glass. With its unique positioning in the market as a seven-seat electric SUV, the Ioniq 9 presents a compelling option for buyers looking for a premium electric vehicle.
