Several years ago, Ford took the lead in challenging Tesla for electric vehicle sales in the US. However, Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) emerged as a strong contender by introducing a range of impressive EVs. The latest addition to their lineup is the three-row Hyundai Ioniq 9. The market for three-row electric SUVs is limited, with only about eight offerings available, mostly premium models.
The Ioniq 9 and its sibling, the Kia EV9, share the same core architecture but have distinct designs. The Ioniq 9 boasts a sleek profile with unique lighting elements and a drag coefficient of 0.267. It offers five trim levels, each with various features like power driver and passenger seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and captain’s chairs in higher trims.
The third row in the Ioniq 9 is surprisingly spacious, accommodating adults comfortably. The vehicle’s performance varies across trims, with the top models offering 422-hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, achieving a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds. The suspension setup includes MacPherson struts in the front and a five-link system in the rear.
Driving the Ioniq 9 showcases its stability, agility, and comfortable ride quality. The vehicle features Hyundai’s highway drive assist system and an infrared driver monitor camera for added safety. The Ioniq 9 also offers Plug&Charge capability for seamless charging experiences.
In terms of pricing, the Ioniq 9 starts at $60,595 for the base model and goes up to $76,590 for the top Calligraphy trim. Despite the premium pricing, the Ioniq 9’s range, fast charging capabilities, and spacious interior make it a compelling option in the three-row EV SUV market.
Hyundai’s decision to offer a larger battery across all trims ensures that buyers get over 300 miles of range, catering to the needs of families looking for a reliable electric SUV. The Ioniq 9’s production and battery supply facilities in Georgia highlight the brand’s commitment to expanding its EV lineup and meeting the growing demand for electric vehicles in the market.
