Hyundai has unveiled its latest electric city car, the 2025 Hyundai Inster, set to hit Australian markets next week. Priced at $39,000 before on-road costs, the Inster boasts a driving range of up to 360km from its 49kWh battery in Extended Range guise. This compact car comes in three trims: Standard, Extended Range, and the rugged Inster Cross, featuring a four-seat configuration and front-wheel drive.
Compared to the BYD Dolphin Essential and MG4 Excite, the Hyundai Inster stands out for its size, measuring 3825mm long, 1610mm wide, and 1575mm tall. It shares similarities in dimensions with the Mini Cooper E and offers a spacious interior with reclinable backrests and fold-flat seats, promising good packaging with a boot capacity ranging from 280L to 351L based on seat configuration.
Derived from the South Korean-market Casper, the Inster deviates from using the 800-volt E-GMP platform found in larger EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 6. The base model Inster Standard Range features a 42kWh NMC battery, a 71kW electric motor, and urban-friendly specs, including a 327km driving range. The vehicle comes equipped with various tech features such as LED headlights, 10.25-inch screens, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, and advanced safety systems like blind-spot monitoring and AEB.
For an additional $3500, buyers can opt for the Inster Extended Range model, offering a larger 49kWh battery pack for an extended 360km range, along with enhanced features like 17-inch alloy wheels and a more powerful 84kW electric motor. The range-topping Inster Cross variant, priced at $45,000, boasts a robust exterior design, upscale interior amenities, and added safety technologies like blind-spot cameras and front parking sensors.
Hyundai presents a wide array of color choices for the Inster, including options made from recycled waste tires. The Inster Cross even offers matte paint finishes for an additional cost, catering to diverse consumer preferences. While a sporty concept called the Insteroid exists, it remains unlikely to enter production as a flagship model.
With the introduction of the 2025 Hyundai Inster, Hyundai aims to tap into the growing demand for compact electric vehicles, offering a blend of efficiency, practicality, and advanced features to cater to urban commuters and eco-conscious drivers. As the automotive industry continues to shift towards electrification, models like the Inster play a crucial role in expanding the market for electric vehicles and promoting sustainable mobility solutions.
