In a bid to rival the latest Honda Civic Type R, the upcoming 2026 Toyota GR Corolla is set to receive a significant power boost. Reports indicate that the new model will trade its current turbocharged three-cylinder engine for a more potent 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo, generating over 260kW.
The development of the second-generation GR Corolla is already underway, with the same engine slated for use in the revived Celica and other GR models. Both the GR Corolla and the new Celica will feature advanced all-wheel drive systems and offer a six-speed manual transmission option.
Rumors suggest a more radical design approach for the GR Corolla, following the style of the latest C-HR SUV. This design direction is expected to extend across the entire Corolla lineup, including the sedan and wagon variants alongside the hatchback.
Inside, the new Corolla models will showcase a modern cabin design reminiscent of the latest Prius, featuring a high-set digital instrument cluster and a large infotainment screen. Physical climate control dials and shortcut buttons will be placed below the touchscreen for convenience.
While the top-tier GR Corolla will boast the larger 2.0-liter engine, the rest of Toyota’s light car range will be powered by a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. This new powertrain is anticipated to offer various hybrid options to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions, with power outputs ranging from 96kW to 132kW.
The development of these new engines signifies a significant step forward in compact engine design, with improved thermal efficiency and packaging compared to current petrol engines. This move aligns with the industry trend towards more sustainable and eco-friendly powertrains.
By introducing these advanced powertrains across its lineup, Toyota aims to cater to a diverse range of customers seeking both performance and fuel efficiency. The shift towards hybrid and plug-in hybrid options reflects the growing demand for greener vehicles in the automotive market.
As Toyota continues to innovate and adapt to changing consumer preferences, the upcoming 2026 GR Corolla and the revamped engine lineup signal the brand’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology and performance in its vehicles.
