After almost five years since their European debut, Volkswagen has finally introduced the ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs to the Australian market. The long-awaited models are set to hit the Australian shores mid-year, with prices starting at $59,990 plus on-road costs.
When compared to its rival, the Tesla Model Y, the ID.4 comes in at a lower price point, signaling a competitive edge in the electric SUV market. Delays in the release were attributed to various factors, including prioritization of markets with stricter emissions regulations and negotiations for a more competitive pricing structure.
The ID.4, resembling the traditional mid-sized SUV like Volkswagen’s Tiguan, boasts a 210kW/545Nm rear-mounted electric motor powered by a 77kWh battery, providing an impressive 544km claimed range on WLTP standards. On the other hand, the ID.5 GTX model offers a larger 79kWh battery and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined 250kW output and a range of 522km.
In terms of pricing, the ID.5 GTX starts at $72,990, while the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 Pro variants are expected to be available later in 2025. The ID.4 and ID.5 models support fast charging up to 175kW and AC charging up to 11kW, catering to the growing demand for efficient charging solutions.
The ID.4 Pro comes equipped with a range of features, including a heated steering wheel, adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, and a 12.9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Safety is also a top priority, with seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and a 360-degree camera system.
The ID.5 GTX model adds a sportier exterior design, front sports seats, a 20-inch alloy wheels, and a premium 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Both models are currently available for purchase in Australia, with deliveries set to commence in the coming months, marking a significant milestone for Volkswagen’s electric vehicle lineup.
With the introduction of the ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs in Australia, Volkswagen is making a strategic move to tap into the growing demand for electric vehicles in the market. The competitive pricing, advanced features, and impressive performance specifications of these models are expected to attract a new segment of environmentally conscious consumers looking for sustainable mobility solutions.
