Vintage Car Show in Sutherland Supports Disability Services

A vintage car show held in Sutherland, Australia, serves as a platform to support disability services, bringing together car enthusiasts and the community for a charitable cause. The event, organized by Sylvanvale, features over 100 classic vehicles on display, including rare gems like the 1931 Model A Ford 2 door Delux Tudor sedan named “Henry” and the 1923 Oldsmobile “Six” Model 30 2 door Sports Roadster known as “Ollie”.

Ken Warburton, the show’s founder and a dedicated collector, invested significant time and resources in restoring these iconic cars, with “Henry” undergoing a $55,000 refurbishment after being discovered in a burnt-out state in Newcastle. “Ollie”, boasting a straight 6 Cylinder side valve engine, showcases impeccable cosmetic and mechanical condition, having been meticulously maintained by its previous owner since the early 1970s.

In addition to these standout vehicles, the exhibition includes a 1930 Model A Ford Special Delivery Van and a 1931 Model A Ford Slant Window 4 door Town sedan from Mr. Warburton’s private collection. The event, which has evolved into one of the largest community gatherings in Sutherland Shire, attracts around 7000 attendees annually, offering a diverse range of activities such as food stalls, raffles, and entertainment for families.

The primary objective of this showcase extends beyond the celebration of vintage automobiles; all proceeds generated from the event are directed towards the procurement and customization of a new wheelchair-accessible vehicle to benefit individuals with disabilities, a cause close to Sylvanvale’s mission of support and inclusivity. Leanne Fretten, the chief executive of Sylvanvale, emphasizes the critical role of accessible transport in empowering people with disabilities to engage in essential daily activities, from attending medical appointments to pursuing education and social engagements.

Notably, clients from Sylvanvale’s Garden House and Caringbah Craft Centre actively participate in the event by selling handmade products, showcasing their talents and contributing to the fundraising efforts. The initiative, spearheaded by Mr. Warburton, who was recognized as the 2023 Sutherland Shire Citizen of the Year, holds personal significance as his family’s involvement in supporting individuals with disabilities dates back to the establishment of Sylvanvale in 1947.

The vintage car show not only serves as a nostalgic journey for automotive enthusiasts but also as a beacon of hope and solidarity for the community, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and support for individuals with disabilities. This annual event exemplifies the power of collective efforts in driving positive change and creating a more accessible and compassionate society.
