A turbo LS-powered EH Special took center stage at the Drag Challenge in Western Australia, showcasing its dominance on the drag strip. Tim McClure, the owner, hailing from Western Australia, brought this beast to the competition, impressing spectators with its unassuming appearance but roaring performance. The EH, initially equipped with a 186 engine, has undergone various transformations over the years before settling on its current powerful LS setup.
Tim’s journey with the EH spans two decades, evolving from a modest 186 engine to a turbocharged 202 and later a 400ci small-block before transitioning to the current turbo LS configuration. The decision to turbocharge the LS came during a modification process necessitated by the need for custom headers, ultimately leading to the installation of a Pulsar S480 turbo running at 10-11psi with management from a Holley Terminator X.
The Drag Challenge in which Tim participated marked his first entry into the event after years of anticipation. Accompanied by friends and his son, Tim’s EH performed admirably throughout the competition, achieving consistent runs and showcasing its potential. Despite initial concerns about the road legs with the trailer, the EH proved its mettle, culminating in an impressive 10.33@136mph run, hinting at the possibility of breaking into the nines with further modifications.
The EH’s setup includes a Turbo 350 gearbox, nine-inch differential, and Weld Draglite rims wrapped in Nankang rubber. Tim’s meticulous approach to the build, including utilizing the standard rotating assembly and opting for a BTR Stage Two Turbo cam kit, reflects a balance between performance and budget constraints. The camaraderie and shared passion among Tim and his crew during the Drag Challenge underscore the community spirit and thrill of competitive racing.
Looking ahead, Tim expresses eagerness to participate in future Drag Challenges, emphasizing the rewarding experience and camaraderie that define such events. Despite the EH’s impressive performance, Tim remains pragmatic about the possibility of further modifications to push the car into the nines, highlighting the careful balance between performance goals and safety considerations.
Tim’s EH Special stands as a testament to the ingenuity and passion of Australian street machine enthusiasts, blending power, craftsmanship, and a sense of camaraderie that define the drag racing community. The Drag Challenge not only serves as a platform for showcasing high-performance vehicles but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and shared passion among participants, embodying the spirit of competitive racing and automotive innovation.
