In an exclusive interview with Chasing Cars, Tesla’s Country Director for Australia and New Zealand, Thom Drew, revealed the company’s strategic planning for the Cybertruck’s local release. Tesla acknowledges Australia as a vital market within its Asia-Pacific sales region, second only to China in volume.
The Cybertruck, renowned for its distinctive design featuring stainless steel panels, promises impressive performance metrics. With three motor configurations available in the US, including the high-performance Cyberbeast variant, the Cybertruck boasts remarkable towing and payload capabilities, setting it apart from traditional utes like the Ford Ranger.
The surge in demand for electrified utes, exemplified by models like the BYD Shark, has prompted Tesla to reconsider the timing of the Cybertruck’s Australian launch. While hybrid utes offer a glimpse into electrification, Tesla believes that Australians are ready for a fully electric workhorse like the Cybertruck, which offers unparalleled range and capability.
Recognizing the untapped potential in the Australian market, Tesla has intensified its efforts to introduce the Cybertruck. The company has brought two additional demonstrators to Australia for an expanded marketing campaign, seeking valuable feedback to gauge local interest and drive momentum towards an official launch.
Despite the potential high price points for the Cybertruck in Australia, likely exceeding $100,000 for the base model and reaching up to $200,000 for the top-tier variant, Tesla remains optimistic about the vehicle’s reception. The introduction of a more affordable Rear Wheel Drive trim could further broaden the appeal of the Cybertruck in the Australian market.
