Suzuki is gearing up to introduce a series of hybrid vehicles in Australia, including the Vitara, S-Cross, and the new Fronx SUV. This move comes after a delay in their hybrid plans, with the company set to launch these models within the next 12 months. The COVID-19 pandemic saw a surge in Suzuki’s sales, driven by the demand for affordable new cars amidst rising prices in the used car market.
The upcoming lineup includes an updated Vitara small SUV featuring hybrid technology, alongside a hybrid S-Cross and the budget-friendly Fronx city SUV. Suzuki’s foray into hybrid models was initially proposed five years ago, with the new Swift mild-hybrid leading the charge in this electrification journey.
Following the Swift, Suzuki plans to introduce hybrid platforms across its range, with an electric vehicle based on the eVX concept slated for release in late 2025 or 2026. The company aims to align with Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard through these hybrid offerings, making slight adjustments to meet upcoming emissions regulations.
While Suzuki has already introduced mild-hybrid and full-hybrid versions of the Vitara and S-Cross in Europe, the specific hybrid systems for the Australian market remain undisclosed. The Vitara hybrid, set to arrive as a facelifted model, will boast a refreshed exterior, upgraded interior features, and enhanced safety technologies.
The mild-hybrid Vitara will be powered by a 95kW 1.4-litre turbo four-cylinder engine, complemented by an electric motor and 48-volt battery. On the other hand, the full hybrid variant will utilize a 75kW 1.5-litre non-turbo engine coupled with a 24kW electric motor and 140-volt battery, delivering a combined output of 85kW.
Details regarding the S-Cross hybrid for the Australian market are yet to be confirmed, with the model expected to align with the specifications of the Vitara hybrids. The Fronx, a new addition to Suzuki’s lineup, is a mild-hybrid city SUV based on the Baleno hatch, offering a blend of petrol and electric power for enhanced efficiency.
As Suzuki expands its hybrid offerings, the company is strategically positioning itself to cater to evolving consumer preferences and regulatory requirements. The introduction of these hybrid models signifies Suzuki’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in the competitive automotive landscape.
