Robert Koch’s EH Holden, swapped with a 1UZ engine, stands as a modern twist on the classic Baby Boomer EH model. The EH Holden, a General Motors creation, has retained its popularity over the years, with a rich history of customization and modification by car enthusiasts. Robert Koch, an apprentice carpenter, embarked on the journey of transforming an EH into a unique street machine with the guidance of his hot rodder uncle, Alvin.
After a challenging search for a suitable shell, Robert and his uncle decided to build their own version of the EH Holden street machine. Originally planning for a straightforward build with a Commodore V6 engine, the project took a dramatic turn when they stumbled upon a Toyota quad-cam V8 at a local wreckers. This discovery sparked a seven-year transformation journey that went beyond their initial vision of a cool cruiser.
Robert Koch meticulously handled the engine swap, modifying the HR front crossmember and incorporating a rear-mounted shortened VH steering rack for improved performance. Custom front brakes using VN rotors and LandCruiser calipers, along with a Supra five-speed gearbox, were integrated into the build. The Toyota V8 engine received a Microtech ECU and a twin-throttlebody inlet manifold for enhanced power and aesthetics.
The street machine’s power was transferred to the ground through a Ford nine-inch rear end with 4.11:1 gears, ensuring an exhilarating driving experience. The bodywork involved minimal repairs, with meticulous attention given to achieving show-quality standards. Robert spent months perfecting the Kawasaki Lime Green Candy color scheme, painting every detail meticulously to create a head-turning finish.
Robert’s dedication extended to the interior, where he crafted a custom dash, console, and seating arrangement using innovative materials and techniques. The EH Holden’s interior was expertly trimmed in off-white Italian leather, adding a touch of luxury to the performance-oriented street machine. After rigorous engineering consultations and meticulous assembly, the EH Holden passed its registration test with flying colors.
