Reimagining Classic Aussie Muscle: Drive South’s Modern Hatch Revival

Drive South, a visionary project by Andrew South, is on a mission to resurrect the essence of iconic 1970s Australian muscle cars with a modern twist. The Drive South Hatch, a brainchild of Andrew, aims to blend the classic looks of the 70s with cutting-edge technology, offering enthusiasts a chance to experience the nostalgia of the past with the performance of the present.

The idea of creating these revamped classics stemmed from Andrew’s realization during a parts run for his Torana hatch project. Instead of painstakingly restoring old parts, he pondered the possibility of building entirely new vehicles that capture the spirit of the iconic Aussie muscle cars. This train of thought led to the birth of Drive South and its ambitious project, the Drive South Hatch.

Unlike the original 1970s models, the Drive South Hatch will boast a modern independent rear suspension setup using a 9-inch rear end. Constructed with an aluminum chassis and a composite body, reminiscent of the construction methods employed in current Supercars Championship racers, the vehicle promises a blend of lightweight design and structural integrity.

The engineering behind the Drive South Hatch is meticulous, leveraging CAD design and an extruded aluminum platform chassis similar to prestigious brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini. By incorporating a GM Performance LS3 engine, a TR6060 manual or 6L80 automatic gearbox, and a nine-inch IRS with a 35-spline Strange center, Andrew aims to harmonize contemporary technology with the classic aesthetics of the 70s.

The vehicle’s underbelly will feature a double tubular A-arm arrangement with coil-over shocks and 320mm disc brakes coupled with six-piston calipers on all wheels, encased in 18-inch forged aluminum wheels. Inside, modern conveniences such as a full leather interior, digital dashboard, multimedia system, air conditioning, electric-hydraulic power steering, power windows, and push-button start will elevate the driving experience.

With a target completion date set for late 2024, the Drive South Hatch is poised to undergo the compliance process to be road-ready under the Low-Volume Manufacturer legislation. The ultimate goal is to make this modern classic available for public purchase, complete with warranty and full registration, mirroring the experience of acquiring a brand-new vehicle.

While the exact pricing is yet to be finalized, Andrew estimates a price point around $250,000, aligning it with the value of a well-maintained original hatch. For those intrigued by this fusion of heritage and innovation, further details can be explored on the Drive South website, where the journey of resurrecting classic Aussie muscle cars unfolds.
