Matt Bulmer’s 1963 Chevy Impala, powered by a blown LS2 engine, is a tribute to classic American iron. The car’s journey began with Matt’s childhood memories of a family Impala, leading him to seek out a similar model years later. After a meticulous search, he found a pristine ’63 Impala that became the canvas for a remarkable transformation.
With the help of skilled friends like John Spinks and Damien Lowe, the Impala underwent a comprehensive rebuild that elevated it to a new level of performance and style. From a flat firewall to a fully customized engine bay, every detail was meticulously crafted to enhance both aesthetics and functionality.
The decision to go with an LS2 engine was driven by practical considerations, including header clearance issues that made the LS conversion a more viable option. The addition of a Magnuson/PWR blower brought an unexpected power boost, with conservative boost levels ensuring a safe yet exhilarating driving experience.
Throughout the rebuild process, the Impala’s transformation was a labor of love, with every detail carefully considered and expertly executed. From the upgraded suspension and power steering to the monster Baer brakes, modern components were seamlessly integrated into the classic design.
As the project neared completion, the pressure mounted when Matt and his fiancée, Rachel, set a wedding date that coincided with the car’s final stages. A mad rush ensued to ensure the Impala was presentable for their special day, showcasing the dedication and teamwork that fueled the project.
Despite the challenges and tight timelines, the Impala made its mark at Summernats, earning accolades and recognition for its impeccable craftsmanship and unique design. The LS2 engine, paired with a custom-built transmission and other performance upgrades, delivered impressive power and handling on the road.
Today, the Impala stands as a testament to Matt’s passion for classic cars and his commitment to preserving automotive history with a modern twist. The blend of vintage charm and contemporary performance makes this ’63 Impala a standout in the street machine scene, embodying the spirit of innovation and creativity that drives car enthusiasts worldwide.
