If you have a keen eye for street machines, the slammed HR Premier known as ‘Premi-air’ may ring a bell. This iconic build was the brainchild of the late Laurie Starling, a renowned fabricator who embarked on this project after transitioning from mini-trucks. The custom chassis, impeccable fabrication work, and airbag suspension showcased Laurie’s craftsmanship at its finest when the vehicle was unveiled at MotorEx 2011.

Despite changing hands a few times post its MotorEx appearance, the HR caught the attention of Laurie’s parents, Rob and Julia Starling, in late 2020. To honor Laurie’s legacy, the Laurie Starling Memorial Trust acquired the vehicle with plans to complete its transformation. Carmine De Maria of CAD Custom in Melbourne took on the responsibility of finishing the build, with past recipients of the Laurie Starling Memorial Scholarship contributing to the project.
The team, consisting of industry experts like Summernats judge Owen Webb, 2020 SMOTY winner Aaron Gregory, and Norm Stewart, collaborated to finalize the HR’s design. Retaining the exterior’s original aesthetics, they aimed to create a seamless look by integrating the bumpers into the body and updating the side mirrors and badges. The interior design focused on modernizing while preserving the car’s unique features, with meticulous attention to detail in every aspect.
The cabin transformation involved modeling components such as the floorpan, dash, and seats to align with the team’s vision. Distressed leather and suede materials were intricately incorporated to enhance the interior’s appeal, with custom elements like the door cards, center console, and seating arrangements reflecting a blend of vintage charm and contemporary style.

With a rendering showcasing a striking two-tone candy red and white pearl roof finish, the final color choice will be determined through a public poll as the project progresses. Rob Starling expressed excitement over the collaborative effort, emphasizing the significance of preserving Laurie’s legacy in the automotive industry.
The HR Premier boasts a potent LS1 engine, a custom chassis, airbag suspension, and a meticulously crafted interior, embodying Laurie Starling’s dedication to excellence and innovation. The project serves as a testament to Laurie’s enduring influence and the collective effort to ensure his vision is realized to its fullest potential.
