A Lamborghini Huracán burst into flames after a terrifying crash at Misano during the GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS round. Lamborghini driver Georgi Donczew was involved in the incident when he was spun by a BMW driver, Darren Leung, at Turn 11. The collision sent Donczew’s car careening into the Armco barrier, causing a fiery explosion that engulfed the Huracán.
As the Lamborghini spun across the track towards the gravel trap, other cars behind attempted to dodge the wreckage. Unfortunately, Lionspeed GP driver Gabriel Rindone’s Porsche 911 clipped the stationary Lamborghini, exacerbating the situation. The race was red-flagged with 44 minutes remaining on the clock due to the severity of the crash.
Following the accident, Leung expressed regret and relief that Donczew emerged unscathed. He explained the dynamics of the incident, citing the high-speed nature of the corner and the challenges it posed for both drivers. Despite the apology, the crash had significant implications for the race, necessitating a lengthy delay before the competition could resume.
Once the race recommenced, Garage 59 drivers Marvin Kirchhofer and Benjamin Goethe secured victory in their McLaren 720S. This triumph marked a significant milestone for Garage 59, as it was their first win since 2016 in the Blancpain GT Series. Winward Racing’s Lucas Auer and Maro Engel claimed second place in their Mercedes-AMG, followed by Porsche team Rutronik Racing’s Patrick Niederhauser and Sven Muller in third.
Prior to the main race, Team WRT’s Valentino Rossi and Raffaele Marciello emerged victorious in their BMW M6. Alessio Rovera and Vincent Abril of AF Corse secured the second spot, while Team WRT’s Charles Weerts and Kelvin van der Linde rounded out the podium, showcasing a strong performance throughout the weekend.
Despite the dramatic crash and subsequent delays, the Misano round of the GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS provided thrilling on-track action and showcased the resilience and skill of the drivers and teams involved.
