Kon Voulinos’s journey with his Wild Plum XA GT Falcon is a tale of transformation from a stock vehicle to a powerful street machine. Originally purchased as a replacement for a fast ride, Kon’s GT underwent a series of accidents that led to its evolution into a distinctive custom car with nearly 500 horsepower.
Acquiring the XA GT 18 years ago, Kon’s initial intention was to find a slower car, but fate had other plans. The car, equipped with a 351 Clevo engine, became a weekend warrior in Shepparton, Victoria. However, a couple of mishaps, including a door kicked in by a motorcyclist and a damaged roof from a fallen streetlight, set the stage for a significant overhaul.
Approximately a decade ago, Kon seized the opportunity to restore the GT to its original Wild Plum color scheme, albeit with a personal touch. More recently, a decision was made to enhance the car’s performance, leading Kon to Selva Racing Power for a driveline upgrade. The goal was to boost the power output of the original 351 engine while maintaining drivability.
Collaborating with Danny Selva, the GT’s engine was fine-tuned to produce an impressive 484 horsepower with the potential for even more. The modifications included a mild cam, increased compression, and expert porting of the stock 4V cylinder heads. The result was a powerplant capable of reaching close to 600 horsepower when fully unleashed.
Following the engine upgrades, the GT was entrusted to Greg Maskell at Revhead Restorations for a comprehensive build. The project involved fitting a six-speed T56 Tremec gearbox from Mal Wood Automotive without altering the original body. The meticulous approach ensured that the car could be reverted to its stock configuration if desired, maintaining its authenticity.
Enhancements extended to the GT’s suspension, wheels, and brakes to complement the increased power output. The interior received a refresh, including new carpets, seatbelts, and gauges, while retaining its classic design. The attention to detail and respect for the GT’s heritage resulted in a tastefully modified vehicle that pays homage to its roots.
With a focus on preserving the GT’s originality while enhancing its performance, Kon’s XA GT Falcon stands as a testament to the fusion of classic aesthetics and modern engineering. The meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful modifications have elevated this car from a mere vintage model to a true street machine that commands attention on the road.
