If you recall the December 2018 issue of Street Machine, you might remember Ian Wright’s unassuming HT Kingswood, a white and gold-roofed beauty powered by an LS engine. Fast forward to today, and you’ll be amazed to see the transformation this same car has undergone.
The HT Kingswood shed its chrome accents for a sleek black finish, setting it apart from its factory counterparts. Ian’s journey with the car began with a quest for more power and a desire to stand out in a world of turbocharged machines.
Working tirelessly in a friend’s workshop, Ian upgraded the Kingswood with a 403-cube LY6-based engine, twin turbos, and a robust transmission setup. The exterior received a vibrant red makeover, complemented by JEGS SSR Spike wheels and meticulous attention to detail.

With the mechanical enhancements in place, the HT Kingswood made its debut at Summernats 34, marking a significant milestone in its evolution. However, a mishap on the road post-event led to a major setback, prompting Ian to embark on a second round of modifications.

Undeterred by the setback, Ian seized the opportunity to further enhance the Kingswood’s performance and aesthetics. Collaborating with expert craftsmen, the car underwent a comprehensive overhaul, including chassis reinforcements, a new paint job, and upgraded interior features.

The revamped HT Kingswood made a triumphant return to Summernats in 2023, earning accolades and reaffirming Ian’s dedication to creating a blend of show-worthy aesthetics and street-ready performance.

Despite its impressive power output of 802hp, courtesy of the twin-turbo LY6 engine, Ian prioritizes the HT’s drivability and family-friendly appeal. The car’s versatility, from leisurely cruising to spirited driving, is a testament to Ian’s vision for a high-performance yet practical vehicle.
Looking ahead, Ian contemplates pushing the HT Kingswood’s limits further, potentially aiming for a power output exceeding 1000hp. While drag racing may not be on the immediate horizon, the car’s capabilities make it a contender for future high-performance endeavors.
Throughout its transformation, Ian’s dedication to creating a unique and powerful street machine shines through, showcasing the fusion of classic aesthetics with modern performance upgrades. The HT Kingswood stands as a testament to automotive creativity and the pursuit of automotive excellence.
