Holden Legacy Unveiled: South Australian Exhibition Showcases Iconic Automaker’s History

Holden Legacy Celebrated in South Australian Exhibition

The State Library of South Australia is currently hosting a captivating exhibition titled “Rear Vision: The Holden Collection,” delving into the extensive history of General Motors Holden. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity for enthusiasts of both cars and history to explore the archives of this iconic automaker, shedding light on its operations, workforce dynamics, and technological advancements.

Originally founded as a saddlery in Adelaide in the 1850s, Holden transitioned into automobile assembly and motor body building before being acquired by General Motors in 1931. The exhibition chronicles the evolution of Holden from a prominent South Australian brand to the introduction of Australia’s first locally-made car in 1948, culminating in the closure of the company in 2017. It highlights the stories of dedicated employees, the impact of women in the workforce, and Holden’s significant role in shaping Australia’s post-war identity.

The State Library of South Australia has a longstanding relationship with General Motors Holden, dating back to the 1990s when Holden began donating historical materials to the library. Following the conclusion of the Holden brand in Australia, the State Library became the custodian of its archive, ensuring that the memories and narratives associated with this beloved brand are preserved for present and future generations. The collection includes archival records of GM Holden Ltd and its various predecessors, such as JA Holden & Co and Holden’s Motor Body Builders Limited.

Having operated independently in South Australia for 75 years before becoming part of General Motors, Holden’s archive at the State Library houses a range of unique artifacts, including rare car plans that provide a distinctive glimpse into the company’s design processes. “Rear Vision: The Holden Collection” offers visitors access to original materials, rare documents, and insights from former employees, offering a comprehensive overview of the rise and eventual decline of this iconic Australian institution.

Megan Berghuis, Director of the State Library of South Australia, emphasized the significance of showcasing Holden’s history, describing it as a vital part of South Australia’s heritage. The exhibition is a collaborative effort between the library’s archival and exhibitions teams and the Holden Manufacturing Heritage Association, aiming to curate a selection of captivating artifacts, drawings, images, and resources that encapsulate the essence of this beloved brand.

During the exhibition’s duration, attendees can look forward to special events featuring talks by authors, researchers, historians, and Holden experts, as well as engaging activities for children, family-oriented events, and Holden car displays in the State Library forecourt. “Rear Vision: The Holden Collection” is a tribute to the enduring legacy of Holden and its profound impact on Australia’s automotive landscape.
