Ford Australia, in collaboration with local Ford tuner Rob Herrod, introduced the 2020 Ford Mustang R-Spec to the Australian market. Herrod Performance, known for upgrading Falcons and Mustangs, worked closely with Ford Performance to enhance the Mustang GT. The R-Spec boasts new components like a supercharger, improved brakes, revised suspension, and aerodynamics, transforming it into a homegrown muscle car icon.
Ford’s efforts to build the Ford Performance brand in Australia included supporting the Mustang’s entry into the Supercars Championship. The development of the Mustang Supercar involved both the US and Australian Ford Performance teams, striving to retain the iconic DNA of the Mustang despite its race-focused modifications.
The heart of the R-Spec is a supercharged V8 engine developed in collaboration with Ford Performance, Roush, and Herrod. The 5.0-liter V8 received an Eaton supercharger, enhancing its performance. The engine calibration by Roush, paired with a Herrod Performance exhaust system, delivers a potent powertrain with 522kW of power and 830Nm of torque.
On the track at The Bend Motorsport Park, the R-Spec showcased its power and agility, hitting speeds over 200km/h effortlessly. The manual transmission complements the V8 engine, providing a thrilling driving experience with precise gear shifts and ample torque for quick acceleration.
Aside from the power boost, the R-Spec received significant handling upgrades. MagneRide adjustable dampers, Ford Performance springs, adjustable stabilizer bars, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires on 19-inch Ford Performance wheels enhance its cornering capabilities and overall agility.
While the interior remains largely unchanged, focusing on performance enhancements, the R-Spec offers digital displays, Recaro seats, and unique ‘R-Spec’ touches. Despite some criticisms of interior quality, the overall package justifies its price tag, with all 500 units sold out before production even began.
Manufactured in Melbourne, the R-Spec undergoes modifications at a local production line, involving former Ford employees. This Australian touch gives the R-Spec a unique identity, labeled as a Herrod Performance Mustang rather than a standard Ford model.
The Mustang R-Spec’s blend of power, handling, and Australian craftsmanship makes it a compelling choice for muscle car enthusiasts. Its success in the market reflects the demand for high-performance, locally-tailored vehicles that offer a unique driving experience.
