Engine testing is set to take place ahead of the Repco Bathurst 1000, with a focus on the Ford crankshaft and updates from AVL, a renowned testing facility. This testing will involve both Ford and Chevrolet engines and will occur at Queensland Raceway following recent AVL testing in the United States.
Concerns arose after a series of crankshaft failures in Ford Mustang Supercars at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 and subsequent ride day. Notably, Richie Stanaway’s Penrite Racing Mustang experienced a crankshaft failure during the Sandown race, with two additional failures occurring during the ride day, prompting a thorough investigation.
Supercars General Manager of Motorsport, Tim Edwards, emphasized the importance of confirming any engine modifications before the prestigious Bathurst race. He stated that testing of the Ford engine with an updated crankshaft and the Chevrolet engine with AVL testing updates will be conducted on track in the upcoming week.
Following the Sandown incidents, Ford’s Supercars engine supplier, Motorsport Powertrains, swiftly initiated investigations to address the issue before the Repco Bathurst 1000. All Ford Supercar engines were recalled to the Queensland facility for comprehensive rebuilding and assessment.
Ford announced its collaboration with Ford Performance to address the crankshaft concerns by sourcing Mustang GT3 crankshafts for the Bathurst event. This modification, subject to homologation, aims to rectify the issues encountered during the Sandown races, ensuring optimal engine performance for the upcoming competition.
The Repco Bathurst 1000, a hallmark event in the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship, is scheduled for October 10-13 and is eagerly anticipated by motorsport enthusiasts. Tickets for the event are already available for purchase, underscoring the excitement surrounding this iconic race.
