Back in 2006, Ford Performance Vehicles engineers embarked on a unique after-hours project that would inadvertently foreshadow a trend in the automotive world. They resurrected a 2002 BA Falcon that had seen its fair share of testing and mishaps, including a ‘kangaroo crash test’ that left it worse for wear. This car, later known as the DRIF6, was not meant to be a pristine machine but a fun project using spare parts and ingenuity.
Powered by a turbo Barra six, the DRIF6 made its debut at Ford’s family open day before becoming a PR car for FPV. It even saw action in the Australian Drifting Championship under the skilled hands of Aussie drifter Adam Newton. Despite its humble beginnings, the DRIF6 left a lasting mark, etching itself into the memories of many car enthusiasts.
Unlike many prototypes, the DRIF6 survived the transition when Ford took over FPV, eventually finding its way to the UK and then New Zealand. It traveled far and wide before landing back in Australia in the hands of Zane Heath, a dedicated enthusiast with a passion for Barra engines and Falcons.
Zane meticulously restored the DRIF6, staying true to its original form while adding modern upgrades for enhanced performance. The car, with its unique history and character, was recently unveiled at the Geelong All Ford Day, marking its return to the spotlight as a piece of Ford Australia history.
As Zane plans to take the DRIF6 out for some track days and possibly a bit of drifting, the car’s story comes full circle, from a forgotten test machine to a beloved piece of automotive nostalgia. Its journey serves as a reminder of the creativity and passion that drive car enthusiasts to preserve and celebrate automotive history.
Looking back at the DRIF6’s journey, it is a testament to the enduring appeal of custom-built machines and the dedication of individuals like Zane Heath, who keep the spirit of innovation and craftsmanship alive in the automotive world.
