Cupra, the Spanish challenger brand, has unveiled its plans for the Australian market, confirming the launch of the facelifted Leon hatch and the Sportstourer wagon in October this year. Additionally, Cupra will reintroduce its electric Born hatch to Australia in 2026 after a temporary halt in sales earlier this year.
During a special event commemorating three years of the brand’s presence in Australia, Cupra announced the imminent arrival of the two Leon models – the hatch with two variants and the Sportstourer initially with one. The Leon hatch will debut with the entry-level 110kW S mild-hybrid and the top-spec VZx variants, followed by a 150kW plug-in hybrid (PHEV) next year.
On the other hand, the Sportstourer will be offered in the 200kW PHEV VZe version from the start. Originally slated for an April 2025 release, both models faced delays due to production and shipping issues.
The updated Leon hatch boasts refreshed styling, enhanced cabin technology, and a range of engine options. The S model is powered by a new 1.5-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid engine, while the VZx retains its impressive 221kW/400Nm output. The Sportstourer, a new addition for Australia, replaces the Golf R wagon and was displayed at an event in Melbourne.
Both plug-in hybrid models combine a 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering 150kW in the hatch and 200kW in the Sportstourer. All models feature a dual-clutch automatic transmission, with different speed configurations between the hybrids and petrol variants.
As for Cupra’s Born electric hatch, it is set for a comeback in Australia in 2026 following a successful run that led to a sell-out in June. The model, available in the VZ variant, offers impressive specs, including a powerful electric motor and a substantial driving range.
Prior to the sell-out, Cupra slashed prices significantly, making the Born more accessible to consumers. The model will return with the VZ variant, featuring notable upgrades and enhancements.
Cupra Australia has hinted at some features for the upcoming Leon and Born models, including ‘Cup’ bucket seats, new paint options, and distinctive alloy wheels. Pricing and detailed specifications for the Australian versions are yet to be disclosed, keeping enthusiasts eagerly awaiting more information.
Overall, Cupra’s upcoming releases signify the brand’s commitment to innovation and electrification, catering to a diverse range of consumers looking for performance-oriented vehicles with a touch of Spanish flair.
