Car Shows Australia

Car enthusiasts from all corners of Australia gathered at the Australian Van Nationals 2024, a vibrant display of custom vehicles that left spectators in awe. The event, held in Stanthorpe, Queensland, marked the 49th annual Van Nationals, drawing a diverse array of custom Holdens, Fords, Chryslers, and Chevrolets from the 80s and 90s era.

Organized by passionate van lovers Christine Dowton and Andrew Farrell, the Australian Van Nationals paid tribute to the roots of the van scene, with a special focus on the first Queensland Van-In held in Stanthorpe in 1979. The event celebrated not only the custom vehicles but also the picturesque setting of Stanthorpe known for its apples, wineries, and welcoming community.

Despite initial rainy weather disrupting some activities, the enthusiasm and spirit of the participants shone through. From a cruise along Stanthorpe’s main drag to poker runs exploring local vineyards and breweries, the event offered a mix of sightseeing, camaraderie, and of course, a showcase of meticulously maintained and creatively modified vans.

The highlight of the show was the ‘show ‘n’ shine’ event on Sunday, where nearly 200 vans graced the Stanthorpe Showgrounds, ranging from classic FJs to modern Commodores, showcasing the evolution and diversity of van customization over the years. Spectators marveled at the ingenuity and passion poured into each vehicle on display.

Noteworthy vans like Paul Murray’s ‘Iron Man’ HR van and Ian Wood’s ‘La Catrina’ EH van captured the attention of attendees with their unique designs and powerful engines. Awards were presented to exceptional vans, recognizing the hard work and dedication of their owners in preserving and enhancing these automotive treasures.

As the 49th Van Nationals came to a close, the anticipation for the 50th-anniversary event in Mildura, Victoria, in 2025 was palpable. With a growing interest in the Australian van scene evident from the significant number of first-time participants, the future of car shows in Australia looks promising, with enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the next gathering to celebrate their shared passion for custom cars.
