BMW’s latest super-sedan, the M5, made its debut with a track test at Bathurst, where two M4 GT3s secured a 1-2 finish just 24 hours earlier. This launch coincided with the introduction of a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, marking a significant technological advancement for the M5 series that dates back to 1984.
The M5’s evolution has seen various engines and drivetrains, from a V8 with a manual gearbox to a Formula 1-inspired V10 and a turbocharged version. The latest F90 model introduces a plug-in hybrid version priced at $259,900, combining a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor for a total output of 535kW and 1000Nm of torque.
However, the addition of electrification has significantly increased the weight of the M5, tipping the scales at 2436kg, nearly 600kg heavier than its predecessor. Despite the weight gain affecting the power-to-weight ratio, the M5 still boasts impressive acceleration, reaching 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 200km/h.
The M5 offers a range of driving modes, including an electric-only mode with a WLTP range of 68km and an official consumption of 3.0L/100km. On a long country-road touring loop, the M5 showcased its agility and power, with features like Integral Active Steering and M xDrive all-wheel drive enhancing its performance on both straight roads and corners.
While the M5’s weight is noticeable during hard braking, the sedan impresses with its handling and traction, especially on challenging corners like The Cutting and Quarry Corner. The addition of carbon-ceramic brakes and the availability of a Touring wagon variant provide options for those seeking improved stopping power and practicality.
Overall, the electrification of the M5 has brought new capabilities to the model, allowing for electric commuting and improved efficiency. Despite the weight increase, the M5 G90 remains a versatile and capable super-sedan, offering a blend of performance and comfort that upholds the legacy of the M5 series.
