MotorTrend’s Roadkill, a beloved online hot rodding show, will be concluding its 13-year run. Co-host Mike Finnegan shared the news on Reddit, revealing that the production company was shutting down, marking the end of new Roadkill episodes after the completion of season 13.
Roadkill made its debut on YouTube in 2012, featuring hosts Finnegan and David Freiburger embarking on adventures across the US, purchasing and customizing project cars, engaging in drag races, and offering viewers a glimpse into the hot rod culture of the country.
2024 has been a somber year for car show enthusiasts, with the UK’s Top Gear facing an indefinite hiatus and the retirement of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May from The Grand Tour. The digital media landscape has also witnessed changes, as popular presenters from Donut Media and Hoonigan departed after acquisitions by new owners.
In a bid to celebrate automotive passion, Australian YouTube channel Mighty Car Mods collaborated with Roadkill by building a Subaru WRX ute to challenge Roadkill’s V8-powered 1968 Chevrolet Bel Air. However, following Discovery’s acquisition of MotorTrend, Roadkill transitioned to a paid streaming platform, altering the accessibility of the show.
While bidding farewell to Roadkill and MotorTrend, both Finnegan and Freiburger have established their individual YouTube channels, ensuring that audiences will continue to enjoy their automotive content. Despite the conclusion of several online and televised automotive shows, the film industry is experiencing a surge in car-related movies, with projects centered around Initial D, Matchbox, Bullitt, Days of Thunder, and an F1 film featuring Brad Pitt currently in post-production.
