Australian Van Nationals 2024: Vanning Enthusiasts Descend on Stanthorpe

Australian Street Machine enthusiasts gathered in Stanthorpe for the 49th annual Australian Van Nationals in 2024. The event, which originated from a small club’s initiative in 1979, has grown significantly over the years. Stanthorpe, known for its scenic beauty and cool climate, provided a perfect backdrop for this year’s celebration.

Organizers Christine Dowton and Andrew Farrell, along with their team, put immense effort into ensuring a memorable experience for participants and spectators. Despite initial rainy weather, the event kicked off with enthusiasm, featuring activities like a van cruise and poker runs to local attractions.

The show on Sunday was a spectacular display of nearly 200 vans, ranging from classic models to modern custom creations. The variety on display showcased the evolution of van culture over the years. Standout vans included a replica of Carroll Shelby’s iconic workhorse, a themed van honoring the ‘Day of the Dead,’ and a meticulously restored HX Sandman, among others.

The awards ceremony recognized exceptional vans and their owners, with Gary Scicluna’s ‘Skid Row’ Escort clinching the top honor. Noteworthy mentions included a factory beige EH pano with a powerful engine, a restored Chrysler Drifter van, and a long-standing FJ van that has become a classic in its own right.

The event concluded with a celebratory dinner, setting the stage for next year’s 50th-anniversary Van Nationals in Mildura, Victoria. The success of the event and the increasing participation of first-timers reflect the thriving Australian van community. The future looks promising for enthusiasts eagerly anticipating the milestone event in 2025.
