Aussie-Built V12 LS Powers Ridler Award-Winning 1953 Corvette

A groundbreaking achievement in the world of custom cars was marked by the victory of a 1953 Corvette at the prestigious 2024 Ridler Award. This exceptional vehicle, named Twelve Air, was meticulously crafted by Kindig-It Design for owners Dave and Tracy Maxwell. While it carries the essence of a ’53 Corvette, it was entirely handcrafted, deviating from traditional GM components and drawing design cues from the 1953 GM Motorama Corvair concept car.

The heart of this award-winning car lies in its engine, a remarkable Australian-built V12 LS. The engine, a product of collaboration between Dave Kindig and Race Cast Engineering, showcases the innovative prowess of Australian engineering. Race Cast Engineering, known for its cast products and engine development, embarked on the challenge of creating a bespoke V12 LS engine for Twelve Air. This endeavor involved cutting and casting blocks, utilizing 3D-printed sand molds, and employing advanced manufacturing techniques to produce a high-performance engine tailored to the unique specifications of the Twelve Air project.

The engine’s construction involved a fusion of Australian ingenuity and global expertise. Components such as LS7-based heads from Higgins, custom camshafts by Clive Cams, and precision machining by Dandy Engines and BNR Engines contributed to the engine’s exceptional performance. The meticulous attention to detail extended to the integration of a Haltech Nexus R5 VCU, IGN-1A coils, and a custom wiring loom by GR Motorsport, showcasing a harmonious blend of cutting-edge technology and craftsmanship.

Noteworthy is the distinctive design of Twelve Air’s V12 engine, featuring a bespoke intake manifold and front and rear covers crafted by the Corish brothers. These unique components not only enhance the engine’s performance but also contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of the vehicle. The engine’s wet-sump configuration, coupled with a Melling high-volume pump and custom oil pan, ensures optimal lubrication and performance under demanding conditions.

Dave Kindig’s vision for a 600hp engine with a distinctive sound led to the creation of a bespoke powerplant that delivers 650hp at 5400rpm. The engine’s unique firing angles and internal configuration, including a 15-degree split-pin crank and specialized components, contribute to its exotic exhaust note, reminiscent of vintage F1 engines. This bespoke engine, meticulously crafted over several years, culminated in Twelve Air’s triumph at the Detroit Autorama, where it clinched the prestigious Ridler Award.

The success of Twelve Air underscores the collaborative efforts of global automotive enthusiasts and the unmatched craftsmanship of Australian engineers. This remarkable achievement not only showcases the capabilities of Australian-built engines but also sets a new benchmark in the world of custom car design and innovation.
