Reviving Aussie Muscle: Drive South’s Modern Take on Classic Cars

Drive South, an innovative automotive endeavor, is on a mission to resurrect the essence of classic Australian muscle cars from the 1970s with a modern twist. The brainchild behind this ambitious project is Andrew South, who envisions a contemporary version of these iconic vehicles infused with cutting-edge technology.

The concept of Drive South was born out of Andrew’s realization during a routine trip to procure car parts for his Torana hatch project. Contemplating the laborious and expensive process of restoring vintage vehicles, he pondered the idea of creating entirely new cars that encapsulate the spirit of the bygone era. Drawing inspiration from his own Targa-ready LX Torana, Andrew embarked on the journey to bring to life the Drive South Hatch.

Unlike its predecessors, the Drive South Hatch will boast a state-of-the-art independent rear suspension system, a departure from the original live-axle setup. Constructed with an aluminum chassis and a composite body, reminiscent of contemporary Supercars, this vehicle is engineered to be a lightweight powerhouse. The chassis, meticulously designed using CAD software, mirrors the advanced construction techniques employed by renowned luxury car manufacturers like Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Under the hood, the Drive South Hatch will house a GM Performance LS3 engine paired with a TR6060 manual or 6L80 automatic gearbox, delivering a formidable 325kW of power. The drivetrain will feature a nine-inch IRS with a 35-spline Strange center, ensuring optimal performance and handling. Complementing its modern mechanical components, the vehicle will sport a double tubular A-arm front suspension, 320mm disc brakes with six-piston calipers, and 18-inch forged aluminum wheels.

Inside, the Drive South Hatch will offer a luxurious interior equipped with contemporary amenities such as a digital dashboard, multimedia system, air conditioning, power windows, and push-button start. The fusion of classic 70s styling with modern comforts underscores Drive South’s commitment to blending nostalgia with innovation.

Scheduled for completion in late 2024, the prototype of the Drive South Hatch signals a new chapter in the realm of Australian automotive engineering. With plans to comply with Low-Volume Manufacturer regulations, Andrew aims to produce up to 100 units annually, ensuring that these reimagined classics reach enthusiasts seeking a unique driving experience.

While pricing details are yet to be finalized, Andrew estimates the Drive South Hatch to be competitively priced around $250,000, aligning it with the value of well-maintained original models. For those intrigued by this groundbreaking project, further information can be found on the official Drive South website, offering a glimpse into the future of Australian street machines.
