Enthusiasts have long championed wagons as a superior alternative to crossovers, but the reality is that wagon sales are dwindling. Volvo’s V90, a rare gem in the wagon category, is facing the end of its production soon. Despite its low sales figures, the V90’s obscurity makes it an appealing option for used car buyers seeking a good deal.
When in the market for a family car, the author initially considered electric and plug-in hybrid options, eventually setting sights on the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer and Skoda Superb iV. However, a turn towards used Volvos led to the discovery of the Volvo V90 as a surprising contender.
After extensive research and filtering, the author found a top-trim, plug-in hybrid V90 that ticked all the boxes. Despite some financial stretch, the deal was sealed, and the author became the proud owner of the ‘unicorn’ V90 PHEV.
The V90 PHEV boasts a robust powertrain with 455 horsepower, offering a swift acceleration of zero to 60 mph in under five seconds. While not a performance-oriented vehicle, the V90 excels in comfortable long-distance cruising, as evidenced by a seamless 1,100-mile journey home.
Volvo’s unique PHEV setup features a 2.0-liter gas engine powering the front wheels and an electric motor driving the rear wheels, providing an efficient all-wheel-drive system. With a substantial battery capacity and powerful driveline, the V90 T8 Recharge offers a blend of performance and efficiency.
The V90’s tech features, including Android Automotive OS, Pilot Assist driver assistance suite, and one-pedal driving mode, enhance the overall driving experience. While the car excels in comfort and performance, it falls short in providing detailed EV-specific information to the driver.
Despite its limitations, the V90 T8 Recharge stands out as a practical daily driver, offering a blend of comfort, performance, and efficiency. The author appreciates the car’s understated elegance and anticipates a reliable ownership experience, despite concerns about future spare parts availability.
As the automotive industry evolves towards electrification, the Volvo V90 PHEV represents a unique blend of traditional luxury and modern eco-consciousness, making it a compelling choice for enthusiasts seeking a practical yet distinctive driving experience.
