Ford Performance is set to introduce the global Mustang Cup one-make racing series to Australia in 2026, marking its first international expansion. The series will provide a platform for drivers to compete in identical factory-built machinery, emphasizing driver talent over budget advantages.
The announcement was made at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and will be part of the 2026 SRO SpeedSeries calendar, featuring a six-round championship. With the Mustang’s popularity among Australian enthusiasts, this new racing series is expected to be a major attraction.
At the core of this series is the Mustang Dark Horse R, a track-only race car designed by Ford Performance for high-performance racing straight out of the box. This vehicle offers both thrilling performance and durability, leveling the playing field for competitors.
Cameron McLeod, an Australian driver, recently showcased the Dark Horse R’s capabilities by winning two Mustang Challenge races at the Le Mans 24 Hours. The Global Director of Ford Performance, Mark Rushbrook, highlighted the car’s purpose of providing an accessible and competitive platform for drivers.
To manage and promote the Mustang Cup Australia series, Ford Performance has partnered with Driving Solutions, a team led by James Stewart and Jo Higson. The Category Manager, Liam Curkpatrick, will ensure the series runs smoothly. The partnership aims to create a professional and competitive series for both young and experienced drivers.
The series has received official approval from Motorsport Australia and will be integrated into the SRO SpeedSeries platform, ensuring widespread event promotion and television coverage. This move adds another exciting chapter to the Mustang’s long racing history in Australia.
Andrew Birkic, President and CEO of Ford Australia, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming championship, emphasizing the Mustang’s special place in the hearts of Australians. The series is expected to provide a clear pathway for aspiring drivers and contribute to the Mustang’s racing legacy in Australia.
While technical regulations and entry details will be announced later, teams and drivers can already express their interest in participating in the 2026 championship. The introduction of the Mustang Cup Australia series is anticipated to enhance the Australian motorsport scene with the thunderous sound of Dark Horse R Mustangs on the track.
