Mark Sullivan, known for his powerful muscle cars, has shifted gears to a new direction of automotive excellence. His latest project, a 1966 Lincoln Continental convertible, showcases his love for the low and slow lifestyle. This build marks a departure from his previous high-horsepower creations, focusing instead on comfortable cruising and striking aesthetics.
Finding a rare model like the Lincoln Continental in Australia presented its challenges. With only 3810 convertible Contis made in 1966, locating a suitable project car was akin to a needle in a haystack. Mark turned to California, sourcing the car from Los Angeles with the help of a friend’s sister. The car’s intricate roof mechanism, boasting numerous relays and switches, posed a unique challenge that Mark skillfully overcame.
Mark’s dedication to craftsmanship is evident in the meticulous restoration of the Lincoln. Addressing minor dents and rust, he transformed the car’s exterior with a vibrant PPG Solitaire blue paint. The striking color choice, coupled with matte black accents, highlights the car’s sleek lines and classic design.
Not content with the factory stance, Mark equipped the Lincoln with Slam Specialties airbags and Monroe shocks, achieving a distinctive low-riding profile. The rear suspension underwent significant modifications, including a four-link setup and mini-tubs to accommodate the custom wheels. Overcoming challenges with the stock differential, Mark ensured the Lincoln’s performance matched its sleek appearance.
Under the hood, Mark opted for a Ford 351 Cleveland V8 engine, a departure from the original MEL V8. The engine upgrade, featuring performance components like a Comp Thumpr camshaft and ported heads, enhances the car’s drivability. Custom touches, such as an alloy radiator and twin fans, improve cooling efficiency and overall engine performance.
Inside, Mark’s attention to detail shines through with a custom interior featuring electric VQ Statesman seats and diamond-stitched burgundy trim. The craftsmanship extends to the door cards, center console, and rear seating, showcasing Mark’s dedication to creating a unique and personalized driving experience.
Mark’s ’66 Lincoln Continental represents a fusion of classic design and modern customization, embodying his passion for automotive innovation. While he enjoys cruising in his latest creation, Mark’s future projects promise to continue pushing the boundaries of automotive excellence. With a keen eye for detail and a commitment to quality, Mark Sullivan’s legacy as a master car builder is sure to endure.
