Ford Performance is embarking on an extensive logistical operation to transport over 35 Ford Mustang Dark Horse R race cars and teams to France for the inaugural Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational. This event, scheduled for June 11-14 at the iconic Circuit de la Sarthe, will mark the international racing debut of the Dark Horse R, the spec car used in the IMSA-sanctioned Mustang Challenge and USAC-sanctioned Mustang Cup.
Chris Ward, the global one-make manager at Ford Performance, describes this endeavor as the largest shipping effort to Le Mans by an American manufacturer. Unlike previous factory efforts, this venture is a full customer operation, signaling a new chapter for Ford. Ward expresses enthusiasm for organizing such a significant event during the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans week.
Ford Performance has adopted two logistics routes for this event. Partnering with Scan Global Logistics, 22 Dark Horse Rs and equipment will be flown on a Boeing 747 Freighter to Frankfurt, Germany. Concurrently, 20 more race cars are being shipped via sea freight to Antwerp, Belgium, where they will be leased to customers for the supporting races during the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Both sets of vehicles will converge at Le Mans for a two-day shakedown at Circuit Lurcy-Lévis before the main event. Ward notes the global interest in the race, with participants traveling from various countries, including Australia, showcasing the universal appeal of the event.
Upon arrival at the Maison Blanche support paddock, teams will have several days to prepare their cars before official on-track activities commence. Ward commends Scan Global Logistics for their support and guidance, ensuring that all teams are well-prepared for the logistical aspects of the journey.
While the final participant list is pending, Ward anticipates over 35 cars competing in the event, including a special ‘Dark Horse Stars’ class that will feature notable entries like Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Farley. The Ford Performance Junior Team drivers are also set to participate, showcasing the development program’s commitment to nurturing talent in sports car racing.
Ward envisions an exciting weekend of racing with the roar of Coyote V8 engines echoing through the iconic Mulsanne Straight. The spectacle promises a unique blend of competition and camaraderie as teams and drivers from around the world converge at Le Mans for this historic event.
As the Mustang Challenge Le Mans Invitational draws near, the anticipation and excitement surrounding this groundbreaking event continue to build, setting the stage for an unforgettable showcase of Ford Performance and the iconic Mustang Dark Horse R.
