Cadillac’s latest offering, the Escalade IQ, an electric SUV, has been making waves since its launch in San Francisco. With a claimed range of 460 miles, the question arose – could this luxury juggernaut make a trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles on a single charge?
Journalist Jonny Lieberman, along with his team, embarked on this road trip adventure to put the Escalade IQ to the test. Setting off with a 96 percent state of charge and 449 miles of range, they opted for a scenic route down Route 101, making stops at the Madonna Inn and a Taiwanese noodle joint before reaching their final destination.
Lieberman, drawing from past experiences with long-range EV tests, aimed to drive the Escalade IQ like any other car on a road trip. They maintained a steady speed above the limit, utilizing features like Super Cruise, a hands-free driver assistance system, which encountered a minor hiccup due to a baseball hat interference.
After covering 232 miles but consuming 260 miles of range, it became evident that a charge was necessary. Opting for a quick pit stop in Solvang, California, they were impressed by the efficiency of the 350-kW Electrify America charger, adding over 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
The remainder of the journey was smooth, with the team reaching Los Angeles with 125 miles of range left. Despite the need for a brief charge, Lieberman praised the Escalade IQ for its grandeur and performance, highlighting its luxurious appeal and impressive range. The official MotorTrend Road-Trip Range test confirmed the SUV’s capability, showing a tested range of 415 miles, only slightly below the claimed 460 miles.
Lieberman’s passion for cars, instilled by his father and early experiences, shines through his work as a journalist. His blend of personal anecdotes and expert analysis adds depth to his automotive reviews, resonating with enthusiasts and readers alike. Beyond cars, his interests in beer brewing, poker, and cactus collection reveal a diverse and colorful personality.
As the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, the Escalade IQ’s successful road trip underscores the evolving landscape of electric vehicles. With advancements in charging infrastructure and technology, long-distance journeys in EVs are becoming more feasible and convenient, paving the way for a sustainable future of transportation.
