SAIC has unveiled teaser images of the upcoming hybrid version of the second-generation MG ZS, set to be introduced in Europe and Australia later this year. The new model, anticipated to hit overseas markets in October, marks a departure from its predecessor, which was available in internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) variants. The EV version of the ZS is likely to be succeeded by the MG S5, already undergoing testing in Europe.
From the preview images, it is evident that the redesigned ZS inherits design cues from the second-generation MG 3, particularly in its frontal appearance characterized by a sizable air intake grille and a dynamic dual mouth surround. Resembling the MG 3, the ZS showcases headlight clusters and taillights that contribute to its distinct visual identity. The rear design features integrated exhaust pipes, LED taillights, and a sporty spoiler, enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal.
While specific details about the powertrain are yet to be disclosed, the relationship between the new ZS and the MG 3 suggests a shared setup. The hybrid system is anticipated to include a 1.5-liter petrol engine generating 75 kW of power and 128 Nm of torque, complemented by an electric motor delivering up to 100 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. The combination of both power sources is expected to offer a maximum output of 143 kW and 425 Nm, supported by a 1.83 kWh capacity battery.
The introduction of the hybrid MG ZS underscores a trend observed in MG’s global product strategy, emphasizing a divergence between models offered in China and international markets. Initially, overseas MG models were rebadged iterations of vehicles from other SAIC brands in China; however, recent developments have seen unique models like the MG 3 and MG HS exclusive to international markets. The forthcoming hybrid ZS is poised to follow suit, aligning with MG’s strategy to cater to diverse regional preferences.
SAIC’s decision to launch the hybrid MG ZS aims to revitalize the brand’s sales performance amidst a challenging market landscape. By aligning with evolving consumer preferences and technological advancements, the new ZS underscores MG’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the global automotive market.
