Subaru Corporation has unveiled its latest innovation, the next-generation hybrid system, set to debut on the Subaru Crosstrek in Japan. This hybrid system marks a significant step forward in achieving a balance between driving pleasure and environmental sustainability.
The new hybrid system features a 2.5-liter horizontally-opposed engine and transaxle, utilizing a series-parallel system to optimize power usage between the engine and motor depending on driving conditions. This setup enhances driving dynamics and acceleration while maintaining Subaru’s renowned Symmetrical AWD for reliable performance on and off-road.
One of the key highlights of this next-generation hybrid system is its extended cruising range, made possible by a larger fuel tank and a 20% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to previous models. The compact design of the engine allows for a spacious high-voltage battery and fuel tank, contributing to the system’s enhanced performance and efficiency.
The 2.5-liter Subaru BOXER engine, tailored for the hybrid system, delivers a blend of power and fuel efficiency, complemented by an integrated power control unit optimizing electric power distribution. The transaxle combines two potent motors, a front differential gear, and an electronically controlled coupling for seamless power delivery.
Subaru’s Mechanical All Wheel Drive (AWD) system ensures stability across various road conditions by mechanically connecting the front and rear wheels. The high-voltage lithium-ion battery, stored under the cargo floor, and the enlarged fuel tank further enhance the system’s capabilities, resulting in a significantly extended cruising range.
With a max output of 118 kW and 209 Nm of torque, the engine pairs performance with efficiency, while the traction motor generates 88 kW and 270 Nm of torque, serving as a primary power source in diverse driving scenarios. The lithium-ion battery with a total power of 1.1 kWh contributes to the system’s overall energy efficiency.
Subaru’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in the development of this next-generation hybrid system, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly performance in the automotive industry. The debut of this technology on the Subaru Crosstrek signifies the brand’s dedication to delivering both driving pleasure and environmental responsibility in its vehicles.
This advancement aligns with Subaru’s long-standing legacy of creating reliable and efficient vehicles that cater to the evolving needs of consumers. The integration of cutting-edge hybrid technology into the Subaru Crosstrek reflects the brand’s forward-thinking approach to automotive engineering and its commitment to reducing environmental impact.
As Subaru continues to push boundaries and redefine automotive standards, the introduction of the next-generation hybrid system heralds a new era of eco-conscious driving, where performance and sustainability harmoniously coexist in the Subaru Crosstrek.
