Exciting news for off-road enthusiasts as leaked details confirm the arrival of a diesel variant of the GWM Tank 300 in Australia, along with plug-in hybrid versions of the Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha. The leaked information, reportedly from an internal announcement, reveals that the Tank 300 diesel will be equipped with a 2.4-litre powertrain generating 135kW and 480Nm, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
It remains uncertain whether the diesel option will supplement or replace the existing turbo-petrol and petrol-electric hybrid choices. The Tank 300 falls under the “light off-road” category, distinguishing it from heavy off-road vehicles like the Ford Everest and Toyota LandCruiser Prado. Diesel powertrains are a common choice among its competitors in Australia, with models such as the Mahindra Scorpio, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, and Toyota Fortuner.
Meanwhile, the GWM Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha are set to receive the brand’s 2.0-litre ‘Hi4T’ turbo-petrol plug-in hybrid system. This system, which offers a total system output of 300kW and 750Nm, consists of a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine coupled with an electric motor. The Tank 500 PHEV is expected to provide a 110-kilometre electric-only driving range.
The local release dates for the GWM Tank 300 diesel, Tank 500, and Cannon Alpha plug-in hybrids are yet to be confirmed. However, these new models are anticipated to hit the market within the next six to 12 months. The Tank 500 PHEV is projected to offer a 3.0-tonne braked towing capacity, while the Cannon Alpha PHEV will have a towing capacity of 2.5 tonnes.
GWM Australia is also exploring other models for the Australian market, including a facelifted GWM Ute with a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel and a new-generation GWM Haval H6 expected to be available as a PHEV. Additionally, the Ora Sport electric sedan, Haval H5, Haval H9, and Tank 700 off-roader are under evaluation for potential release in Australia.
These new offerings from GWM mark a significant expansion of the brand’s lineup in Australia, catering to a diverse range of consumer preferences and needs. With the introduction of diesel and plug-in hybrid options, GWM is poised to make a strong impact in the competitive Australian automotive market.
