Genesis is gearing up to enter the electric and plug-in hybrid SUV market with a new range-extender option. This move comes as the automotive industry sees a surge in extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), with Genesis slated to unveil its first EREV model in 2026.
The mid-size luxury SUV segment is already populated with a variety of electrified options, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. Genesis is now poised to introduce an EREV version of its GV70, expected to make its debut in December 2026. This new model will be based on the E-GMP platform used in other electric vehicles within the Hyundai Motor Group.
EREV technology, although popular in China, has not been widely adopted by brands outside that market. Similar to plug-in hybrids, EREVs feature a larger battery capacity than traditional hybrids but smaller than full electric vehicles. In an EREV, a petrol engine serves as a generator to recharge the battery, offering flexibility in charging options while providing an extended driving range.
Hyundai Motor Group’s upcoming EREVs, including an SUV for the Hyundai brand, are projected to deliver a combined range exceeding 900km on a full charge, promising an electric vehicle-like driving experience. Reports suggest that the Genesis GV70 EREV could offer over 200km of electric range from a 40kWh battery pack.
Last year, Genesis announced plans to introduce hybrid vehicles, diverging from its initial strategy of focusing solely on pure electric vehicles. This shift reflects market demands for hybrid models, prompting Genesis to adapt its approach to meet consumer preferences. The company aims to offer a range of electrified vehicles, aligning with its vision for a fully electrified lineup in the future.
In addition to EREVs, Genesis is also planning to introduce a traditional hybrid powertrain, featuring a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder system, in models like the G80 and GV80. Genesis Australia has expressed interest in adding hybrid models to its local lineup as soon as they become available.
While Genesis has previously focused on electric vehicles, such as the GV60 utilizing the E-GMP platform, it is now expanding its offerings to include hybrid, PHEV, and EREV models. The Electrified GV70 will compete with luxury SUVs like the Audi Q6 e-tron, BMW iX3, and Lexus RZ, carving a niche in the market with its unique extended-range electric technology.
The introduction of the Genesis Electrified GV70 and the upcoming EREV version marks a significant step for the brand in the competitive SUV segment, positioning Genesis as a contender against established players in the luxury electric and hybrid market.
