A thrilling 2600km journey unfolded as two classic Aussie muscle cars embarked on a memorable road trip from Melbourne to Bathurst, NSW, home of the renowned Mount Panorama race circuit. The Bathurst Light Car Club’s Speed Weekend in October 2023 provided the perfect occasion for friends Stewart, Ross Perry, and the author to turn their long-held dream into reality.
The Speed Weekend event, offering enthusiasts a chance to race on the iconic track, captured the essence of 70s touring cars, aligning perfectly with the spirit of their street cars and modest racing budgets. Stewart’s XB GT, a seasoned traveler with numerous expeditions to its name, and the author’s Torana hatch, meticulously revamped for such adventures, were the chosen steeds for this epic journey.
Setting off from Melbourne, the route meandered through picturesque landscapes, encountering minor setbacks like a wheel bearing issue on Stewart’s Falcon, swiftly resolved by the adept trio. The journey unfolded through the Dandenong Ranges, Gippsland, and the stunning Sapphire Coast, with refreshing detours to coastal gems and local breweries, adding a touch of spontaneity to the expedition.
En route, a visit to Jeff Micklem’s shed in Bowral, famed for his V8 ‘Alfarrari’ project, provided a delightful pit stop before reuniting with Stewart and continuing towards Bathurst. The climb up the super-tight Macquarie Pass and a drive over the Sea Cliff Bridge offered memorable experiences, leading them to the revered Mount Panorama circuit.
Arriving at the iconic racing venue evoked a sense of reverence, akin to Burt Munro’s arrival at the salt flats in ‘The World’s Fastest Indian.’ The thrill of navigating the challenging track, with its blind corners and steep inclines, culminated in a day of exhilarating hill climbs during the Speed Weekend event.
Despite the Falcon’s grand touring nature and the Torana’s superior performance on the hill climb, both cars showcased remarkable endurance and efficiency throughout the journey. Equipped with modern amenities and enhanced performance features, the cars exemplified a blend of comfort, agility, and track-ready prowess, making the return trip to Melbourne a smooth and rewarding experience.
The adventure encapsulated the enduring allure of classic Aussie muscle cars and the camaraderie shared by enthusiasts on a quest for automotive thrills. As the Speed Weekend beckons enthusiasts to test their mettle on the iconic track, the spirit of Australian street machines continues to thrive, fueling the passion for classic car culture across the nation.
