Car enthusiasts in Victoria gathered at Sandown for the 2007 Easternats, an annual event that attracted a mix of custom cars and street machines. Repco’s sponsorship brought an extra thrill to the three-day event, allowing participants to enjoy extended cruising time on the track. This year, the event saw a decrease in entrant numbers, but it didn’t dampen the excitement as over 660 participants and 30,000 spectators flocked to the venue.
Organized by Jon Davison, the Easternats boasted a variety of activities, including burnouts, street drags, a dyno challenge, and go-to-whoa competitions, catering to all petrolheads’ preferences. Glenn Eastwood emerged victorious in the burnout contest with his black Torana hatch, showcasing his skills and dedication after overcoming mechanical challenges during the event.
Meanwhile, the dyno challenge witnessed impressive horsepower figures, with Darren Maxwell’s Toyota Supra and Mick Voase’s LX Torana leading the pack. David Mizzi’s RX4 and Tim Schefman’s VL Commie shared the limelight in the go-to-whoa competition, demonstrating their prowess in controlled acceleration and braking.
Monday’s street drags saw Daniel Nunziante clinch the top spot for the second consecutive year, showcasing his Cortina’s speed and agility on the track. Despite rumors about potential format changes for future Easternats editions, Jon Davison reassured participants and fans that the event’s legacy would continue, emphasizing the positive behavior of attendees amidst misconceptions about car enthusiasts.
Throughout the event, standout vehicles like Peter Grmusa’s XR Falcon, Ken Hibbert’s VK, and Michelle Hufer’s LJ caught the eye of spectators, showcasing unique designs and powerful engines. Notable mentions included Steve Koukouletas’ Camaro, Shane Stephenson’s XD, and Sash Dukic’s VL, each bringing a distinct flair to the event with their customizations and performance upgrades.
From burnouts to street drags, the 2007 Easternats provided a platform for car enthusiasts to showcase their passion and skills, fostering a sense of community among participants and spectators. Despite the challenges and speculations surrounding the event’s future, the Easternats remained a staple in Victoria’s automotive calendar, celebrating custom cars, street machines, and the vibrant culture of automotive enthusiasts.
