Issue 11 - World Time Attack Challenge 2011
August 5th and 6th played host to one of the biggest import related car events in Australia with the Advan World Time Attack Challenge at Eastern Creek in New South Wales.... You ask but this is Queensland Street Car magazine... what's that got to do with us.... With a huge contingent of us heading down to spectate and compete we decided to run a feature on the mad event and what went down! The main contenders that went down to compete was Mercury Motorsport and GT Autos, both with the state of the art GTR 35's, both the same car but both completely different in pretty much every other aspect. Mercury Motorsports Skyline was debuting the car at the Eastern Creek Track with its owner Mark Hanson behind the wheel for most of the Weekend with Japanese drive Eiji “Tarzan” Yamada from the Cyber Evo team jumping in to have a few laps as well... the extra laps up Tarzans sleeve in different cars gave him the advantage for when he jumped back in his own Evo 9 running the Fastest Lap time of the whole weekend almost 5 seconds faster than his time last year with a whooping 1:28.8510 sec lap time around the fast flowing circuit to take out the event in the Pro Class against the famous Pan Speed Rx7 from Japan and the Sierra Sierra Mitsubishi Evo 8 from the USA . Mark Berry in his Advan / Hi Octane Sponsored GTR 34 was a definite crowd pleaser in the Skyline department the fully aero dynamically designed 34 GTR from Queensland was the fastest of the GTRS on the weekend with an impressive 1:31.9050 but that was still only good enough for sixth place. The competition was that fierce that only five seconds separated the top 10 drivers throughout all the pro cars from Mitsubishi Evos to Mazda Rx7, Silvia S15s even a Lotus Exige GT3 all tricked out in carbon fibre and any mod they could get their hands on to make that extra second. by
Issue 11 - Mower Racing
South East Queensland Mower Racing is one of our newest club in Queensland with a 400m long track suited for high speed drifting and heaps of fun. The track is situated on 7.5 acres of flat land at Champions Way, Willowbank (right up the road from Willowbank Speedway entrance). Mower Racing has been around for years now, but has over the last two years it has become more known by the public and has captured the eye of a lot of petrol heads. Currently we have Sunshine Coast Mower Racing, Bundy Turf Burners, Fraser Coast Mower Racing, Brisbane Mower Racing and Gold Coast Mower Racing. by Ross Ponting
Issue 10 - Festival of Sports Cars
The third of four ‘Golden Anniversary’ events held at Lakeside Park is the Festival of Sports Cars. Open to all 2 or 2+2 seater sports cars, there was a great variety of cars from all eras on the track. Two of the most memorable entrants include the Centaur Waggott driven by John French to claim the 1962 Australian GT Championship, and the WE84 Cosworth driven by Bap Romano in 1984 to take out the Australian Sports Car Championship. Both of these cars not only attended in static displays, but cut laps for the first, and possibly last time, in decades. The Cosworth has been rebuilt after it’s devastating crash at Amaroo Park in 1986, this time with the larger, more powerful 3.5L V8 in its haunches. As for more modern cars, the variety was a little wider. Regularity classes, PLR Clubman/Sports Car class, two Production Car classes and two Alfa Romeo classes were all present. Tin tops or no tops, the racing was fierce, with final results being down to the wire. Perhaps racing a little too competitively, more than one car crashed out on Sunday. On the ground floor of the Lakeside Function Centre, the Queensland Motor Museum displayed some motoring history. Classic Porsches, Alfa Romeos, and an original Mercedes Benz SL300 Gullwing were some of the pieces shown. The Gullwing was even seen cruising the track alongside a pair of Ginetta sports cars.
