Over 27 million hectares of jaguar habitat, an area equivalent to the U.K., have been lost, with 5 million hectares cleared between 2014 and 2023, much of it illegally.
The report sheds light on the indirect role of suppliers linked to JBS, the world’s largest meatpacker, in contributing to this deforestation. Despite commitments to eliminate illegal deforestation from its supply chain by 2025, JBS has been implicated in failing to uphold these promises.
Weak enforcement of environmental laws and attempts by local governments to reverse antideforestation policies have exacerbated the situation as agribusiness holds significant political and economic sway in the region. The urgency of this issue is further emphasized with Brazil set to host the COP30 climate summit later this year.
Jaguars, as keystone species, rely on intact forests for survival and hunting. The Amazon Rainforest serves as a crucial stronghold for these near-threatened animals, emphasizing the critical importance of preserving their habitat.
To quantify the extent of deforestation, researchers combined data on jaguar habitat from the IUCN Red List with land-use change data from 2014-2023. The states of Mato Grosso and Pará, major agricultural hubs, have witnessed substantial deforestation, with 89% of the cleared land lacking legal permits.
The report implicates JBS in the loss of jaguar habitat, citing instances where indirect suppliers associated with the meatpacker have contributed to deforestation. Despite commitments to combat illegal deforestation, evidence suggests that JBS has fallen short of fulfilling its obligations.
