Issue 7 - Gary Brett's 1989 Pontiac
When Gary ‘Buddah’ Brett’s LJ Torana crashed in a nasty top end accident at Willowbank in 2008, he was lucky to escape with his life. A tie rod end tore off in the traps, taking a wheel with it and sent the car into a roll that flipped the car over twelve times. Whilst the car was obviously a write off, Gary emerged with minor injuries, and rated the scariest part of the incident as when he had to face his wife Jody! It was a sad end for the car, as Gary had raced it for twelve years, won an ANDRA gold Christmas tree by winning the Australian Nationals at Willowbank in 2006, secured club and track championships at his Palmyra home track and almost cracked into the eights with a 9.03 at 140mph. When it was decided to return to the track with a new car, Buddah and his crew set out to build one that was going to make an impact! -
Issue 4 - Ross Langford - 2005 Holden Commodore VZ SSZ
Ross Langford is no stranger to tough Holden’s. In the past he’s owned a few cranky Holdens including a HQ Premier with dual headlights and a heavily worked 308/Turbo 400 combo. She wasn’t too flash on the outside but went like a cut cat. Ross Served in the 5/7 Royal Australian Regiment Mechanised Infantry. These brave men and women served in Malaysia in 1986 RCB and defended the air base from attack by communist terrorists. Ross is also the National President of the 5/7 Rar Association and decided to make his car as a tribute to his late wife, his battalion and his solders that have fallen while serving for their country. This 2005 VZ Commodore has the same style as that old HQ but looks a hell of a lot cleaner on the outside. It was built mainly as a tribute to Ross' late wife Mary-Anne who died in a car crash back in 1992. On top of that motive, the car was also planned to be a daily driver that could hold its own on a race track or in a car show. -
Issue 9 - Ray Murray's LJ GTR Torana
The LJ GTR Torana was released into the Australian market in 1972; featuring a 3.3 litre straight six engine and producing 190 horsepower. Thirty-five years later Ray Murrays 5.8 Litre LJ GTR is producing more than double that figure with 420 Horsepower and 1100 Lbs of torque. This is not the first Torana that Ray has owned; his first being an LC back in 1974 when he was seventeen. This was the start of a love affair that has stretched over thirty seven years with nine Toranas in between. Always wanting to build a tough Torana himself, Ray built a very mean LJ with a lethal 202 in it but unfortunately that Torana was stolen back in 1987. This did not deter Ray however; he simply decided to build another one bigger and better! Only this time he had a V8 in mind.. . . Story and photos by www.BJMStudios.com.au
